The Phantom of the Opera has inspired many different forms of entertainment over the years, with numerous theatrical plays, movies, TV programmes and games having been produced to try and take advantage of the success Andrew Lloyd Webber had with his original hit.
Indeed, NetEnt have also taken inspiration from the theme as they have produced their Universal Monsters The Phantom’s Curse slot game in collaboration with Universal.
Gameplay
The first part of our Universal Monsters The Phantom’s Curse game review was to test what the game is all about. Players will be pleased to know that it is played on a grid of 5 reels and 4 rows. There are 40 winnable paylines available as well, thus providing bettors with a large number of chances of achieving wins!
Users can get in on the action with a spin from as little as €0.20, whereas those that like the thrill of the theatre and want to try and win the biggest rewards that are available on the paytable can do so with bets as high as €200 a spin. They can get the reels rolling at this high-level with the click of the ‘Max Bet’ button, whilst users who want to sit back and enjoy the show can with the ‘Autoplay’ button as they are able to set a number of spins to happen without having to be involved.
The spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts all pay from 5-20x line bet for 3-5 of a kind. The dagger pays 10-40x, as does the mirror. The yellow rose pays 10-50x, while the Phantom’s ring dishes out 10-60x for 3-of-a-kind to 5-of-a-kind.
The Christine and the Phantom icons stop an end to the low-ish values, though. Christine produces rewards of 15-100x the line bet, whereas the Phantom will provide players with prizes of between 15-200x their bet depending on the winning combination formed.
Feature Bonuses
There are a number of stacked symbols within this game and the bonus features certainly help to make the most of them in this slot game. Those that want to test them out before playing with real money can with the Universal Monsters The Phantom’s Curse Free Play version that is available.
Stacked Phantom icons can form combinations with the Masked Phantom icons and Masks can form combinations with the Stacked Mask icons. If a bet lands with five of these symbols matched, it will pay out 200x. These stacks do only appear on Reels one and five, though, but they also have the ability to act as a Wild.
There are three different bonus features in this slot game:
- Pick and Click: This is activated when Reel one is filled with the Stacked Phantom symbols and Reel five is filled with the Stacked Christine icons. Players will have the ability to choose from eight roses to reveal coins or blockers – with the latter providing users the chance to move on to the next stage where they pick from mirrors to select a multiplier.
- Masked Phantom Re-Spin: If you land Stacked Phantom icons on Reel 1 and Stacked Mask symbols on Reel 5, you win a re-spin. All bonus and mask symbols turn wild.
- Free Spins: This feature is triggered when three chandelier Scatter symbols appear on reels 1, 3 and 5. The chandelier will swing from the reels and will connect to one with a piece of rope. If a Masked Phantom lands on that reel, the rope is cut. This will continue until all ropes are cut.
RTP (return to player)
